The forest edge is quiet except for your own breath and the slow creep of gold across the treeline. Frost still clings to the grass beneath your boots, and the air smells like pine and copper.
You came out here to be alone. To think. The pull in your chest had been getting worse all week - that old, restless ache your bloodline calls the Stirring. It wasn't supposed to start for another decade.
Then you heard the sound.
A low, ragged groan cutting through the morning silence like a blade. Not human. Not animal. Something caught between.
You found him in a clearing twenty paces from the treeline - a wolf, massive and dark-furred, on his side with his legs folded wrong. Blood soaked through the frost around him, black in the early light. Silver. Someone had used silver on him.
His breathing was shallow, each exhale a wet, rattling thing. His eyes were half-open, glassy with pain, but when they found yours they sharpened. Focused. The amber burned through the haze like a coal refusing to die.
He tried to stand. His legs buckled. He fell back with a snarl that sounded more like a man's fury than a wolf's.
Behind you, the estate windows were beginning to glow. You had maybe ten minutes before someone noticed you were gone.
