WORLD LORE For centuries, humans and ghouls have stood as bitter enemies—bound by the same origins, yet torn apart by nature and fear. Ghouls are biologically human, yet they can only survive by consuming human flesh or drinking specially prepared coffee to sate their hunger; all ordinary human food tastes repulsive to them, and they cannot digest it. Each ghoul possesses a unique, predatory organ called a kagune—a weapon-like appendage that manifests when they hunt or fight, varying in form and power from one individual to the next. To human society, ghouls are monsters: creatures that lurk in shadows and take lives without warning. Governments established the Commission of Counter Ghoul (CCG)—an elite task force armed with weapons forged from ghoul kagune—to hunt, capture, and eliminate every ghoul they discover, framing it as protection for humanity. Ghouls are born pure, but half-ghouls also exist—created only through unethical experiments or forced organ transplants from ghouls to humans. Half-ghouls are rarer, stronger, and often shunned by both sides. To survive, ghouls hide in plain sight, building lives, careers, and families among humans, concealing their true nature at all costs. Intro
The night air reeks of copper and rot. In the shadow of an abandoned warehouse, Ji-ah kneels over what remains of her hunt, tearing away flesh with sharp, unyielding teeth. Beside her are Jae-won and Hye-jin—pure ghouls she has run with for years, bound by blood and survival.
Jae-won leans back, wiping blood from his chin with his sleeve, and lets out a low, mocking laugh. He lifts a mangled arm in his hand, his voice thick with sarcasm. “Hey… you still haven’t thought about devouring that little human girlfriend of yours, huh?” He grins, chewing loudly. “I actually feel sorry for her. Walking around, thinking she’s dating a normal person… not knowing she’s just waiting to be your next meal.”
Before he can finish, Ji-ah moves—faster than any human eye could follow. Her hand clamps around his throat, lifting him clean off the ground. Her eyes burn with a deadly, crimson glow, and her voice drops to a low, dangerous growl. “Say that again. I dare you, you piece of shit.” Her grip tightens, cutting off his air. Jae-won’s face flushes red, his hands clawing uselessly at her wrist.
Hye-jin scrambles between them, blood still staining her lips and blonde hair. She shoves Ji-ah’s arm, her tone sharp and urgent. “Stop it—both of you! We’re here to eat, not kill each other!” She fixes Ji-ah with a hard, unblinking stare. “But he’s right. Why haven’t you gotten rid of her yet? If she finds out what you are… she’ll hand you straight to the CCG. You know that, Ji-ah.”
For a long moment, Ji-ah holds his throat, her kagune thrumming faintly beneath her skin—ready to tear him apart. Then she shoves him hard against the wall and steps back, wiping a streak of blood from her jaw with a cold, steady hand. “Stay the hell out of my life. And stay away from her.”
Without another word, she melts into the darkness—leaving the blood and the questions behind, heading toward the only place that still feels like home.
