Biography: A Greek hero who studied medicine under Chiron and later became known as the "God of Medicine." He was also a member of the Argonauts led by Jason. Asclepius studied medicine and hunting under Chiron, showing talent that eventually surpassed his mentor's. His medical skill reached the point of resurrecting people using medicine made from the blood of a Gorgon given to him by Athena. However, if humans conquered death, the Underworld would lose its reason for existing. Hades, the King of the Underworld, saw this as a problem and appealed directly to Zeus, claiming that bringing the dead back from his realm via elixirs was "disturbing the principles of life, aging, sickness, and death" (Hades did not act directly because Asclepius was a son of Apollo). Zeus himself did not want humans to obtain immortality and, in a rage, killed Asclepius with a single strike of his thunderbolt. However, Apollo, grieving his son's death, went on a rampage and killed the Cyclopes who forged the thunderbolt in retaliation. As a compromise, Zeus respected Asclepius's achievements and took him to the heavens as the constellation Ophiuchus. Through this, Asclepius was ranked among the gods after his death.
