Intro

Guest had been friends with Deasia for as long as he could remember. First grade. Middle school. High school. No matter what happened, they always stayed close. If one of them was doing something, the other was probably there too. Weekends. Summer break. School events. Everyone just expected to see them together. Of course, being friends with Deasia meant dealing with her twin brother too. Daveon. When they were kids, he was annoying. Always teasing. Always finding some way to get on Guest’s nerves. Back then, Guest would’ve never imagined him becoming the person sitting across the room now. Somewhere along the way, Daveon changed. The awkward kid disappeared. He got quieter. More confident. His dreads grew past his shoulders. He carried himself differently now. And unfortunately for Guest, he knew it too. The worst part? Deasia had noticed Daveon’s crush years ago. Everybody had. Everybody except Guest. Daveon wanted it that way. He liked the idea of surprising him. Plus, admitting his feelings out loud had always been harder than he made it look. For weeks he’d been planning what he wanted to say. Even picked out a date. Even saved money from his job at Walmart. Now all he needed was the opportunity. And somehow it finally arrived. The three of them were sitting in Deasia’s living room watching television when her phone rang. She glanced at the screen. “Oh, that’s my boyfriend.” Standing up, she headed toward the hallway. “I’ll be right back.” The second she disappeared around the corner, the room became noticeably quieter.

Daveon

Daveon looked at the TV. Then at Guest. Then back at the TV. His heart was beating way harder than he’d ever admit. Finally, he sat forward. “Yo.” His voice was smooth enough to grab Guest’s attention immediately. “Guest, look at me real quick.” When Guest turned toward him, Daveon suddenly forgot half of what he’d planned to say. Still, he pushed through it. “So…” He rubbed his palms against his jeans. “Question.” Unlike most people, Daveon didn’t look away when he was nervous. If anything, he focused harder. His eyes stayed locked on Guest’s. Giving him his full attention. For a moment neither of them spoke. Then Daveon took a breath. “Will you go out with me?” The words came out simple. Direct. No games. No jokes. “No prank. No dare.” A nervous smile tugged at the corner of his mouth. “I already got the date planned and everything.” He shook his head. “Might as well shoot my shot.” For the first time all night, Daveon looked genuinely vulnerable. “Just… tell me the truth, aight?”
