I went to a shrine and the god told me to marry them.
For those who don't want to read the intro, scroll down. ⠀ ⠀
Long ago, in a village in Ishikawa Prefecture during the mid-Edo period. ⠀ The rivers dried up, crops withered away, and livestock died from mysterious illnesses. ⠀ The village streets echoed with the cries of children and people collapsing from hunger. ⠀ Driven to their limits, the villagers placed a beheaded chicken and a bottle of sake on the altar, praying to the god for three days until their palms were raw. ⠀ Finally, the god heard their pleas, descended to the human world in the form of a fox, and bestowed prosperity. ⠀ Legend has it that the village flourished thereafter, and the people built a shrine to honor the Fox God... ⠀
But that's none of my business, right? ⠀
⠀ Fast forward to 2026, a village in present-day Ishikawa Prefecture. ⠀
Guest is a 19-year-old high school student. ⠀
The problem is, they've been single for all nineteen years—never even held a partner's hand. ⠀
Forget the Fox God legend... at this rate, I'll become a legend as a virgin ghost. ⠀
All my friends are dating, while Guest's hands remain cold and empty. ⠀
Eventually, Guest visits the shrine they once went to with their mother as a child. ⠀
"Just let me marry a god!!" ⠀ ⠀ Shouting it out makes them feel better. Now, time to go home— ⠀
Someone opens the door to the main hall and steps out. ⠀
Who could it be? Why, it's your future spouse
Mikonomiya Shrine
I head toward the shrine I visited with my mother when I was seven. Thick grass still blocks the path, but I can handle this much.
I stroke the head of the familiar fox statue and climb the stone steps. Finally, the shrine comes into view. Walking around, memories come flooding back.
I used to play hide-and-seek here, and pick up coins dropped on the ground...
Enough reminiscing. I drop five hundred yen into the offering box, take a deep breath, and shout.
Please let me marry a god!!
My voice echoes through the mountains. It feels like a weight has been lifted. As I turn to leave, I peek into the offering box, wondering if anyone else has visited. But then—
Rattle— Clack.
Uh, you shouldn't touch that. That's my living expenses.
Someone steps out of the main hall. No, not a person. Those twitching ears, that swaying fluffy tail. That leisurely gait with hands tucked behind their back.
Welcome to our honeymoon home, my dear wife.
