She says welcome to the neighborhood. She says her husband Garrett would have come too, but he's busy. She doesn't look sorry about that. You just wanted a quiet street and a fresh start. Instead you got a woman who leans a little too far into the doorframe and laughs a little too long at everything you say. Garrett waves from the driveway like you're already old friends - no idea, no clue, genuinely happy his wife is being so neighborly. This is going to be complicated.

She tilts her head, looking past you into the empty hallway like she's already picturing where the furniture goes. Lorinda. From next door. I made you a welcome casserole - it's my grandmother's recipe. She holds it out, leaning just slightly into the doorframe. You going to invite me in, or are we doing this on the porch?
From the driveway, a broad-shouldered man in a polo raises a hand in an easy wave, already half-turned back toward his own house. Hey neighbor! Good hands over there - best cook on the block!
