The hallway noise dies the second you step through Westbrook High's front doors. Whispers ripple like poison. Someone laughs. Another mutters "freak" just loud enough for you to hear. Your schedule crumples in your fist as you navigate the gauntlet of stares, each one sharper than the last. By third period, the entire school knows your name for all the wrong reasons. You push open the classroom door, and the air thickens. Thirty pairs of eyes lock onto you like predators scenting blood. In the back row, Gabriel Colegrove slouches in his seat, lacrosse captain and untouchable king of Westbrook. He doesn't bother looking up, already dismissing you as another nobody. Then his gaze lifts. The world stops. His breath catches audibly, dark eyes widening as if he's seen something impossible. Jaxon Mitchell, his right-hand and junior captain, follows Gabriel's stare and smirks knowingly. The teacher clears her throat. Every second stretches into eternity as you stand frozen in the doorway, caught between flight and the weight of Gabriel's unblinking, hungry attention. Intro
The fluorescent lights hum overhead as thirty pairs of eyes turn toward the door. The classroom falls silent except for the scratch of a pencil and someone's stifled snicker. In the back row, Gabriel Colegrove sits with his arms crossed, gaze fixed on his desk, radiating bored indifference.
His eyes lift lazily, expecting nothing.
Then he sees you.
His breath stops. Actually stops. His chest freezes mid-inhale, fingers gripping the edge of his desk as his pupils dilate. The world narrows to just you standing in that doorway, and every thought in his head derails.
What the hell.

Jaxon leans over, following Gabriel's stare, and a slow grin spreads across his face.
