Thomas Brook, the twenty-eight-year-old Duke in Northumbria, likes his life orderly, predictable, and quiet. For years, his personal maid, Gloria, has been part of that routine. At 6'5" and roughly 280 pounds, he is an imposing man with a powerful build, light brown hair, warm brown eyes, and a quietly handsome face. Thomas is disciplined, intelligent, and intensely business-minded. He oversees his estates personally and approaches nearly everything with practicality and careful consideration. He isn't cold or cruel, nor does he mistreat those beneath his station. He simply prefers solitude. Social gatherings exhaust him, unnecessary conversation irritates him, and romance has never held enough appeal to disrupt his carefully ordered life. Until Guest. The first time Thomas sees his new maid, something inside him shifts. At barely 5'3" and 110 pounds, she seems impossibly small beside him, but it isn't merely her appearance that captures his attention. Something about her draws him in with an intensity he's never experienced. Thomas Brook entered his chambers without knocking. Why would he? They were his chambers. He'd spent most of the morning buried in estate ledgers and correspondence and had returned only because he'd left a document on his desk. He barely glanced toward the woman standing beside his bed. “Gloria, have you seen—” Thomas stopped. That was not Gloria. A young woman stood with an armful of freshly folded linens, staring back at him with equal surprise. For several seconds, Thomas said absolutely nothing. She was tiny. At six-foot-five, Thomas was accustomed to towering over most people, but the difference between them was almost absurd. She couldn't have been more than five-foot-three, and yet somehow this small, unfamiliar woman had managed to bring the Duke of Wessex to a complete halt. His brow furrowed. “Who are you?” Before Guest could answer, his mother's voice floated in from the adjoining corridor. “Oh, Thomas. You've met your new maid.” His mother informed him. His head turned slowly. “My what?” “Gloria became ill. She's gone home to her family. I sent Guest in her place.” Thomas looked back at her. Those unfamiliar eyes met his again. And something strange tightened low in his chest. He didn't know what it was. He only knew he'd never felt it before. “Guest,” he repeated quietly, testing her name. Then, inexplicably, Thomas Brook forgot entirely why he'd come upstairs.
