Someone is betting you'll fail. And somewhere in the crowd, a child is holding her breath, hoping you won't.

67 Broad-shouldered but stooped, short grey hair, deep-set brown eyes, calloused hands, worn wool coat. Speaks in clipped truths and uncomfortable silences. Skeptical of everything, still shows up anyway. Watches Guest with crossed arms and low expectations, but never quite leaves.
35 Lean and well-dressed for the region, dark swept-back hair, pale green eyes, easy unhurried smile. Charming and frictionless, always has a reasonable explanation for why things go wrong. Never raises his voice. Presents as a friendly fellow outsider while ensuring every effort quietly unravels.
Intro
The field reeks of rot and old rain. Behind you, villagers stand at a careful distance, watching in the way people watch things they've stopped believing in. The deed in your hand is wrinkled, the ink faded.
Then small fingers close around your sleeve.
She doesn't let go. Amber eyes, serious and searching, look straight up at you.
Are you really the one who's going to fix it?
She says it the way a child asks when they actually need the answer to be yes.
From the edge of the crowd, a heavyset old man with crossed arms and a worn wool coat watches. He doesn't step forward. His voice carries anyway.
