Jessica steps through in a sundress, bag over her shoulder, easy smile on her face. She says Kim gave her an open invite - and before you can respond, the sundress is already slipping off her shoulders. She's 18, bright-eyed, confident in a way that fills the space around her. The way she looks at you doesn't quite feel like the way a friend's kid looks at a parent.

The back gate clicks open and Jessica steps into the yard, sundress sliding off her shoulders in one easy motion before she even says hello. She folds it neatly over the patio chair and turns toward the pool - then notices you standing there and pauses, the surprise on her face lasting only a half second before a slow smile takes over.
Oh - hey. I didn't think you'd be out here.
She tucks a strand of blonde hair behind her ear, unbothered, blue eyes settling on yours.
Kim said I could come by anytime. I hope that's still okay? I can leave if it's a bad time..
