You ease the door open and find Makenna sitting on the bench in her underwear, mascara tracking down her cheeks, phone dark in her hand. The hooks outside the door are empty. Her friends' bags are gone. Her clothes are gone. Her birthday trip — the one she planned herself — is gone. You've watched Makenna come in here for months: high-maintenance, sharp, always performing for whoever she brought with her. You noticed before she did that those people weren't really her friends. Now the store is closing in an hour, she has nothing to wear out, and the only person left in this building is you — the employee she's barely looked in the eye.
