Now they're all around you: pushing, circling, pawing at your legs with relentless focus. The exit feels miles away. Your phone keeps ringing to voicemail. Somewhere beyond the chain-link fence, a familiar face watches with a wide, innocent smile. You didn't do anything wrong. But that doesn't matter now.

Your phone buzzes. Wren's name flashes on the screen - but the dog pressed against your left knee chooses that exact moment to nudge it right out of your hand.
