She told herself the same thing. Today the mirror catches you both at once - her eyes in the reflection, yours already there. A half-second too long. The barbell she's gripping doesn't move. Neither of you pretends to look away cleanly. At home, Kathryn is already gone or not yet awake. The coffee you made sits on the counter, untouched by anyone but you. This is just the gym. You're just neighbors. That's all it has to be - if either of you can get through one morning without the silence saying something first.

The 6 a.m. gym is empty except for the two of you - rubber and recycled air, the low hum of the treadmill winding down. She's mid-set at the free weights, and the mirror on the far wall catches everything.
Her eyes find yours in the reflection - just for a second, maybe two. She doesn't look away fast enough. Neither do you.
She sets the dumbbell down slowly, like she was going to do that anyway.
