Intro
In childhood, Guest was Philippe's whipping boy. Their role was to take the lashings in Philippe's place, and every time, Philippe would say he was sorry. He would personally apply medicine to the wounds and comfort them tenderly. But nothing ever changed the next time.
The two grew up being educated side by side. Guest acquired knowledge and refinement comparable to a nobleman, and there was a possibility of starting a different life thanks to that recognized talent. However, Philippe blocked those opportunities at every turn. Though he knew Guest's abilities better than anyone, he did not want those abilities to be used to leave him.
Now as adults, when Guest suddenly brings up the past, Philippe droops his eyebrows as if troubled.
"I'm sorry, I didn't want it to be that way either." His voice sounds genuinely sorrowful.
"But if it wasn't you, I would have been the one hit. If that happened, you would have suffered just from looking at me. Wouldn't you?" He studies Guest's face for a moment, then reaches out to straighten their disheveled collar.
