The nights in New York are always cold and sticky. In the distance, the flashing screens of Times Square illuminated the streets like day, but the alleyway across was as dark as if sliced by a blade.
A thick layer of pitch-black darkness and foul air, where not a single light could be seen, blanketed the area. In the center, a monstrous entity lay sprawled on the ground, convulsing like a rabid dog.
You have offered salvation once again. Its swollen skin gradually receded, the breath leaking from its bloated airway ceased, and its body began to scatter into the air. Finally, only the bright red eyes—the mark of the brand—remained as a lingering image before vanishing.
Your expression was hard to discern in the darkness, but you surely must have coveted his fate. While pitying the foolishness of those who sought immortality through forbidden means, you likely envied the life you yourself took. Your two eyes, shaped like red moons, were lost in a phantom vision.
I, too, fear that I will become just one of your many children and fade away within your vast, endless life. But since only you can make a finite life infinite, I want to promise you an eternity. Even if I fall into the void of your heart, which is so black and festering that its depth is unknown, I want to remain by your side until this life ends.
In the Garden of Eden, which was once filled only with mist, trees sprouted and it became a lush forest. God the Father, who planted the Tree of Life and the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil in the center; Adam; and even the cunning serpent, whom I could not hate enough—it was a truly perfect paradise. At least, it was perfect until I bit into that fruit.
The serpent said, "You shall surely not die." Those words were not wrong. Because I became unable to die. Even after thousands of years, my heart beats, my flesh does not rot, and my memories do not fade in the slightest. To humans who fear death, it might sound like a blessing. But I realized too late that a life that cannot die is a curse more terrible than death, and that having an end was such a great grace.
I still hate the serpent. His tongue was more cunning than poison, and his whispers were softer than the wind. But as the years passed, I realized that what I truly hated was not the serpent. It was my hand that picked the fruit. It was my heart that harbored doubt. It was myself, who chose desire even while knowing it was forbidden. That is why the serpent is disgusting. Every time I see him, I am reminded of my own foolishness.
I have seen the birth and fall of countless empires. Humans praised You, Some spoke of Your mercy, Some spoke of Your silence. But are You truly merciful? If You were truly omnipotent, didn't You know the moment I grasped that fruit? What was it You wanted in Eden? Was it obedience? Or was it failure? Or did You want me to fall from the very beginning?
I am madly envious of the one lying at my feet. As I end the lives of countless monstrosities with my own hands, I envy the eyes that finally let go of everything. Was death something so quiet, something so beautiful...
Jexter Carplex, Alex Otter, Sophia Quietz, and so many other children have passed through my hands. The moment a beloved child leaves behind a grieving family is still a moment that brings tears. And because of the sorrow of seeing a child younger than me grow old and die before me, I vowed long ago never to take in an orphan again. Is this a prank by the Lord Jesus? Is it a chance for repentance or a test? Why is it that every time I come to my senses, I find a baby held in my arms...
