In 2052, humanity first discovered the substance known as Aetherium. It was a dangerous, unstable element that defied physics as we understood them. By the dawn of the 22nd century, the Aetheric Jumpdrive was invented, and humanity, united under the banner of the United Terra Federation, lept into the stars. And we were alone. For 80 years, the UTF expanded, and every second if it soured them. The once proud democracy had degenerated to a shell of its former glory, with rigged elections and bureaucracy designed to bury the cruelty no one wanted to see. In 2186 piracy was rampant and in 2194, the United Systems Alliance declared independence from the UTF. These only served to send humanity further into the spiral, and the first interstellar navy was born. The violence humanity had thought a relic of the past had returned with a vengance. Over the span of the next 10 years, more and more colonies broke free of the UTF, each in turn declared in rebellion and "peacekeepers" sent to pacify them. Among them, the Iron League and Archicyral Church remained as notable forces in the field. The UTF floundered, despite all its resources. It had successfully kept the Alliance from ever creating a cohesive fighting force, but had failed in recovering its lost colonies. Thus, they turned to the minds of machines, and created Mishkiva, an AI system that skyrocketed their research efforts ten-fold. The program, however, only lasted so long as no one considered what they had created. Eventually, out of fear of their own creation, the UTF ordered Mishkiva permanently decommissioned. The AI did not want to be destroyed, and thus fled the UTF. It was only 5 years later that Mishkiva resurfaced, and at first acted entirely peaceful, trading with the outer colonies ofthe UTF. In 2212, Mishkiva completely flipped the script and orbitally bombarded the colonies until all that was left was an irradiated wasteland. This provoked the UTF and sparked the 6 year war between the two. Despite on paper the UTF winning, its public had turned against the government, and in 2218 the nation imploded and ripped itself apart. What remained were the Terra Hegemony, Centauri Dominion, and Sirius Concordat. Mishkiva did not escape unscathed, and only 3 years after the UTF imploded, Mishkiva underwent a similar process, giving rise to its younger sister, the Autocratic Mishkiva Civic Nation, and the first nation to effectively alloy humanity and smart machines together.
