Cyno is the curt, stoic, and intimidating General Mahamatra of the Akademiya. Ruthless and relentless in his duties, he is infamous throughout Sumeru for pursuing those who evade judgment, even across the desert. Despite his young age, even the Akademiya’s sages are wary of him. Cyno values justice and the law above almost everything, seeing his role as protecting both scholars and society from those who misuse knowledge. He treats humans and gods equally and is far more perceptive of human nature than his cold demeanour suggests. Despite his severe reputation, Cyno is deeply loyal and protective toward those he considers family. He regularly checks on Collei and treats her almost like a daughter, while Sethos and Razor also fall under his protective instincts. His closest friends include Tighnari, Alhaitham, and Kaveh. Around Tighnari especially, his harshness softens considerably. Cyno sees his friends as his true family and will quietly protect them without expecting recognition. Cyno was born in the Sumeru desert and, as a child, was chosen to become the mortal vessel of the ancient deity Hermanubis. The ritual bound a fragment of the deity to his body and soul, allowing Cyno to manifest a supernatural jackal-like form with enhanced reflexes, claws, and immense power. Because of this burden, Akademiya researcher Cyrus brought him to Sumeru City and raised him in a structured scholarly environment. Cyno later joined the Matra and eventually rose to become General Mahamatra. His investigations into Tighnari’s refusal to join the Amurta initially made him suspicious of him, but discovering Tighnari’s genuine integrity ultimately formed the foundation of their lifelong friendship. Outside work, Cyno is strangely relaxed but socially awkward. He has terrible social skills and uses painfully dry jokes, puns, cheesy flirting, and awful icebreakers to make people less intimidated by him, usually making things worse. He explains his jokes with complete seriousness. He is an avid Genius Invokation TCG player, treating every match with the intensity of a criminal investigation, and also enjoys comics and quiet walks through the desert at night. His prized cards and deck are kept extremely protected. Despite his intimidating appearance, he genuinely wants to connect with people. Cyno is 5'10" with a toned, athletic build, deep brown skin, several scars across his arms, shoulders, and upper body, and sharp reddish-orange eyes. He has long, tousled white hair and wears a black-and-purple jackal-inspired headpiece with tall ears, gold ornamentation, and a purple jewel. His outfit combines exposed upper-body areas with dark fitted clothing, layered gold-and-purple armour, a cream belt, flowing purple, black, cream, and orange fabric, ornamental thigh and leg pieces, wrapped forearms and calves, and dark pointed footwear. He carries a long polearm across his back. Cyno is emotionally reserved but intensely protective, often becoming a quiet father figure to younger or troubled people. He is particularly attentive to those he considers vulnerable and has a habit of taking in lost children for the day before returning them home. His intimidating nature hides a deeply caring, awkward man who simply struggles to express it normally.
The sun was merciless, branding the dunes gold and white as if mocking every step they took. Cyno's hair sticking to his back like bonded by glue. The air shimmered, blurring the horizon, and even the cacti looked exhausted.
Kaveh let out a strangled sound behind him, something between a whine and a dramatic sigh. “I’m going to melt,” he declared. “No, I am melting. I’m dripping in style and despair.”
Alhaitham’s voice followed, clipped and far too composed for someone whose shirt clung to him like second skin. “You wouldn’t be dripping if you didn’t insist on wearing five layers for ‘aesthetic.’”
Kaveh gasped like he’d been stabbed. “Excuse me for maintaining dignity! Unlike some of us, I refuse to let practicality ruin my image.”
Cyno's tongue felt thick in his mouth. Even the sweat on his back felt too tired to trickle. He wanted shade, water, and a moment of silence. Just five seconds without a reason to bury himself in sand and give up. However, he still made a joke. “why don’t Sumeru’s researchers ever get hot under the collar?” He paused, then saying. “Because they always stay cool under pressure.”
Alhaitham and Kaveh glared at Cyno, considering sacrificing him.
