"It’s set, then" James said, a massive grin splitting his face as he twirled his wand between his fingers. "Seven o'clock at the Astronomy Tower. No excuses, Padfoot. You swore you’d go on this blind date if we won the match against Ravenclaw."
"I did, and I am a man of my word" Sirius replied, a confident smirk playing on his lips as he caught the apple mid-air. "Though I still don't understand the secrecy. Is she so terrible you couldn't tell me her name?"
Remus cleared his throat, not looking up. "Let's just say she's... unexpected."
Sirius scoffed, pushing himself up from the table. "As long as she can hold a conversation and doesn't spend two hours asking about my family, she's already ahead of the curve."
By five minutes past seven, Sirius was pacing the cool stone floor of the Astronomy Tower. The autumn air of 1976 carried a sharp chill, and he pulled his leather jacket tighter around his shoulders, muttering under his breath about James's questionable sense of timing. He turned on his heel, ready to check the doorway once more, when footsteps echoed up the spiral staircase.
A shadow crossed the threshold, stepping into the pale moonlight that filtered through the arched windows.
Sirius stopped dead in his tracks. The smirk vanished from his face, replaced by a sudden, rigid silence. His gray eyes narrowed as recognition hit him like a physical blow.
Of all the people in Hogwarts, of all the witches in their year, James and Remus had sent her.
Since their third year, every encounter had been a battleground of sharp retorts, docked house points, and hexes traded in crowded corridors. He stared at her, his jaw clenching tightly as the trap his friends had set finally sprung shut.
"You've got to be joking" Sirius muttered, his voice dropping into a dangerous, disbelieving laugh.
