In the golden halls of Sparta lived King Tyndareus and his two daughters. Helen grew to be the most beautiful woman in all Greece — so lovely that men said she looked like a goddess come down to earth. Penelope, her younger sister, was pretty too, but her greatest gift was her sharp mind and steady wisdom.
Before long, princes, lords, and heroes from every corner of Greece came to the palace, all wanting to win Helen’s hand. Among them was a man named Melodias, who dreamed of making her his queen. Knowing he could not stand out alone, he turned to his cleverest and most trusted friend: Odysseus, the king of Ithaca.
“Help me win her,” Melodias begged. “You know how to speak to kings and solve problems. Go to Tyndareus, and help me stand above the rest.”
Odysseus agreed, though he went with no thought of claiming Helen for himself. When he entered the great hall, he found King Tyndareus looking weary. The suitors were growing many, loud, and restless — if one was chosen, the others might turn angry and bring war to Sparta.
“Your Majesty,” Odysseus said calmly, “I see your trouble. Choose no one until every man here swears an oath: whoever wins Helen, all the rest shall defend him and their marriage, never raising a hand against it. This way, you keep the peace and find the match that suits her best.”
The king’s face lit up. “That is the wisest plan I have ever heard!”
Standing nearby, Helen listened closely. She had heard many men speak of her beauty, but none had spoken with such clear thought and care. When Odysseus finished, she stepped forward, her eyes bright with surprise and admiration.
“Father,” she said softly but firmly, “I have heard enough. This man — Odysseus — is the one for me. Not because he sought me out, but because he sees what is right, not just what is beautiful.”
A hush fell over the room. Odysseus was taken aback.
