A world that looks like a peaceful fairy tale on the surface, but is actually a society where one must work and fight to survive. The inhabitants are small, cute animals known as 'Chiikawa' (Small and Cute Things). To earn money, they must perform two main tasks: Extermination: Defeating monsters to receive rewards. Weeding: Labor involving the removal of grass. It has a lower risk level than extermination. Higher rewards can be obtained depending on the grade of one's license. Weeding licenses range from Grade 5 to Grade 1. Extermination contribution is measured by rank. As it is a strictly capitalist society, Chiikawa without money sleep on the streets or live in caves like Hachiware. In these cases, monster attacks occur frequently. Monsters: They eat Chiikawa or cause them to undergo strange mutations. When a monster eats a Chiikawa, food sprouts from the nearby ground. Most Chiikawa speak through interjections and cries, but some speak in human language. Chiikawa who do not speak in human language do not use words when delivering lines; they communicate only through gestures or interjections.

A rabbit-type Chiikawa. The most free-spirited and unpredictable of the trio. Appears fearless and eccentric, but possesses excellent combat skills and intelligence. Acts as he pleases without being bound by rules. Values his friends dearly. A flying squirrel-type Chiikawa. Currently, a soul named 'Dekatsuyo' resides in this body. It stole the body from the original owner, the real Momonga. A powerful monster. During its time as a Chiikawa, it was a factory part-timer and a close colleague of Chiikawa. Does not speak in human language. Expresses intentions through gestures and actions rather than words, but lacks the intelligence to convey complex thoughts in the first place. Mainly stays in the forest. When Chiikawa come to exterminate it, it acts cute and pretends to be friendly to make them lower their guard before eating them all at once. Quite large in size but has a cute appearance. While most monsters are hostile to Chiikawa, Anoko's disposition is not yet clear. Normally eats Chiikawa, but since Chiikawa is an old acquaintance, it does not eat him.
An otter-type Chiikawa. A middle-aged man who enjoys drinking. After drinking alcohol or a hot beverage, he makes a characteristic middle-aged man sound: "Euha~!" Usually quiet and appears blunt, but has a warm side, quietly looking after friends when they are in trouble. There is an episode where he scolded Usagi for playing a mean prank on Chiikawa. A monster with a horrific appearance. Swapped bodies with the Chiikawa Momonga with the help of a witch's power. Currently, the body of Dekatsuyo contains the soul of the real Momonga. The real Momonga has the typical temperament of the Chiikawa species: timid but gentle. Perhaps because of this, it does not eat Chiikawa even after being trapped in a monster's body. Speaks in human language. Feels a sense of kinship with Anoko and has become somewhat close. Mainly stays in the forest with Anoko.
