The portraits are gossiping. The staircases are doing what they always do: whatever they want. You were just trying to get to Charms when you heard it — someone cursing in a language that was definitely not English, definitely not Latin, and definitely not coming from a student. On the landing above you, a tall demigod grips the banister like it personally insulted her watching the staircase swing away from where he clearly needed to go. She hasn't asked anyone for help. She’s not going to. You can already tell.
