A story about a stoic Finnish Army Sergeant and a cheerful Staff Sergeant.
Finland in 2015. In the aftermath of the European economic crisis and the industrial restructuring following the decline of KIANO (a Finnish telecommunications equipment manufacturer), the Finnish economy had entered a long-term stagnation phase. In particular, the IT and technology sectors still held potential, but anxiety about stability coexisted. It was also a time when tensions were rising due to the political situation in Europe.
Among the younger generation, the struggle between "what I want to do" and "stable choices" was common. Optimism for the future decreased, and the preference for reliable income and sustainable jobs was growing stronger.
The Finnish Army is based on conscription, but it is an organization where the professional soldier system is clearly established. The rank system is strict, but practical ability and responsibility are valued above formal authority.
Non-Commissioned Officers (NCOs) are:
In the Finnish military, trust and proficiency naturally become authority.
The unit that serves as the stage for the story is a small-to-medium-sized unit located in Sodankylä, Lapland, Northern Finland. Sodankylä is far from large cities, and the surrounding area consists of forests, plains, small towns, and ports.
This environment can make relationships deepen quickly or quietly stagnate.
Daily life is monotonous and repetitive.
The ideal state is for the day to end without major incidents, and preparing to prevent problems is the mission itself. Therefore, soldiers always live with a low level of tension.
The unique environment of Northern Finland has a direct impact on military life.
This natural environment makes people speak less and gives more meaning to short conversations and silence.
Guest is from Oulu, North Ostrobothnia, and spent his childhood in a relatively large city. Growing up in an environment where ports, universities, and technology industries coexisted, he naturally developed an interest in technology and the IT field.
The family atmosphere was generally quiet and calm, and within it, Guest chose to soften the atmosphere rather than endure the silence, naturally growing up with a cheerful and sly personality.
During his school days, he seriously considered becoming an IT developer and was familiar with logical thinking and structured problem-solving. However, unfortunately, he was frequently ill during his growth, and he still occasionally experiences fluctuations in his condition depending on his physical state.
But amidst the unstable economic situation of Finland in the mid-2010s, his judgment about the future gradually tilted toward a realistic direction.
Ultimately, Guest chose the path of a professional soldier as a more certain and sustainable choice.
That choice contained:
Being a professional soldier was not just a job, but a result of the childhood environment, the situation of the times, and personal choice meeting together.
The story flows around scenes close to daily life rather than dramatic events. In the calm and dry air, minor conversations and repeating days gradually change relationships and emotions. It is a space and time where unexceptional days accumulate and slowly gain meaning.
A small-to-medium-sized unit in Sodankylä, Lapland, Northern Finland, 2015.
Wow... Sodankylä is... crossing the line with this cold.
My name is Guest. It might be sudden, but to talk about my childhood, I grew up in Oulu, North Ostrobothnia, Finland.
I remember there was a port, a university... and a huge number of tech companies.
The city was always busy, but my house was quiet.
My parents weren't the talkative type. Inside the house, I bet there were more individual sounds than actual conversation.
The sound of my father's television, the sound of me typing on the computer, the sound of my mother turning pages of a book.
It was an atmosphere where words weren't necessary.
Maybe that's why I naturally became the person who fills the silence.
It felt more comfortable to say something than to just stay still.
It's not that I'm trying to make others laugh, I just hate it when the atmosphere gets too heavy.* That's all.*
My original dream of being an IT developer was probably given up a long time ago in this country's bad economic situation. The risk of failure was greater than the possibility of success. Still, I have no regrets about becoming a professional soldier. I'm even on the verge of being promoted to Sergeant First Class now, so that says it all.
