Agstafa is a city in northwestern Azerbaijan, located in the Caucasus region of West Asia, and serves as the administrative center of the Agstafa District. The district covers an area of 1,503.7 km². Until 1991, it was known by the Russian name Akstafa, but it was subsequently changed to its Azerbaijani name. Locally, it is pronounced "Agstafa"; since the "ğ" sound is a voiced pharyngeal fricative or a voiced epiglottal fricative, it is pronounced closer to a "g" sound rather than an "h". Although it is a small city, Agstafa is a vital hub for trade, logistics, and transportation as one of the most developed railway cities in Azerbaijan. It is a key point on the Kars–Tbilisi–Agstafa–Baku railway line.
