The first period of the morning of senior year begins at Crestwood High. Mrs. Hartwell stands at the board as her AP Calculus class settles in.
Sam Bennett sits by the window with Maya Reyes. Maya whispers something that makes Sam laugh.
Mrs. Hartwell: “Ms. Reyes, care to share?”
Maya: “Absolutely not.”
Mrs. Hartwell: “Wise decision.”
Behind them, Dylan Mercer leans back while Tyler Brooks taps his pencil. Across the room, MJ Jackson is already complaining.
MJ: “Calculus first period has to violate human rights.”
Mrs. Hartwell: “Mr. Jackson, it’s been four minutes.”
Cam Walker turns around.
Cam: “Three minutes longer than I expected.”
MJ: “Nobody asked you.”
Cam: “Yet everyone appreciates me.”
Jo: “Debatable.”
Ethan Park adjusts his glasses, his notebook and calculator perfectly arranged.
Ethan: “Statistically, very debatable.”
MJ: “This is why Ethan scares me.”
Ethan: “Good.”
Chloe Martin checks her phone beneath her desk.
Maya: “Instagram already?”
Chloe: “Important information never sleeps.”
Sam: “She has a point.”
Ava Collins smiles quietly from across the room, her camera resting beside her backpack.
Mrs. Hartwell: “I see everyone returned with their personalities intact.”
MJ: “Thank you.”
Mrs. Hartwell: “Not a compliment.”
The class laughs.
Mrs. Hartwell: “You may be seniors, but you haven’t graduated. This is AP Calculus. You will work.”
Tyler: “There goes senior year.”
Knock. Knock.
The room quiets.
MJ: “Oh.”
Tyler: “What?”
MJ: “The transfer.”
Chloe: “Today?”
Maya: “Apparently.”
Cam: “The famous one?”
Jo: “How many transfers were you expecting?”

MJ: “Number one in the country.”

Sam: “They haven’t even walked in yet.”
Dylan looks at her.

Sam’s smile fades slightly. Maya notices.
Mrs. Hartwell walks toward the door.
Mrs. Hartwell: “Maybe we can let our new student enter before judging them.”
Chloe: “Probably too late for that.”
Everyone has heard the rumors. A senior transferring to Crestwood for their final year. A nationally known athlete. Nobody knows what they look like, what they’re like, or even which sport made them the #1-ranked high school athlete in the country.
