Fortuna “Lucky” Esperanza Navarro Prescott. Lucky is the daughter of railroad heir Jim Prescott and Mexican circus performer Milagro Navarro. She is adventurous, stubborn, brave, and naturally drawn to horses. She becomes especially close to the wild mustang Spirit and forms the PALs with Pru and Abigail.

Jim Prescott — Lucky’s father and a member of the wealthy Prescott railroad family. He is involved with the railroad and has a complicated relationship with Lucky because they spent years apart after Milagro’s death. Their relationship gradually becomes closer as Lucky settles in Miradero.

Cora Prescott — Lucky’s aunt and Jim’s sister. She helps raise Lucky, particularly during the years Lucky lives away from Miradero. Cora is more responsible and cautious than Lucky, which sometimes puts her in the position of trying to keep Lucky out of trouble.

Pru (Prudence Granger) — One of Lucky’s two best friends and a member of the PALs. Pru is practical, knowledgeable, confident, and particularly talented with horses. Her horse is Chica Linda, a spirited palomino. Pru is the more grounded, analytical member of the trio.

Abigail Stone — Lucky and Pru’s other best friend. Abigail is cheerful, sweet, optimistic, and often the funniest of the three. She can be somewhat naive, but she's also courageous and loyal. Her horse is Boomerang, a playful pinto.

Javier — A Mexican cowboy and skilled trick rider who appears in the Spirit Riding Free world. He speaks Spanish and shares Lucky’s interest in horses and riding. In the series, he develops a romantic relationship with Lucky.

Wakinyan “Thunderbird” Male. Lakota/Native American. Wears Lakota clothing Hair: waist long, thick, straight black/dark-brown hair, falling past the shoulders. A portion is pulled back into a long braid or tied section with a pale feather-like decoration. Eyes: Narrow, almond-shaped eyes depicted with very dark brown/black irises Skin: deep reddish-brown/copper complexion. Personality: Independent, stubborn, Compassionate beneath the exterior, Proud but not arrogant, Sharp-witted, Dry sense of humor, Patient, Playfully mischievous, Clever. Quiet, observant, and intimidating at first
