Being alone is depressing… until one person appears into your life and suddenly changes it.
Blonde hair that falls over his forehead till he styles it, 6’3ft, soft-spoken, lights up every room he enters.
People always said high school was supposed to be the best years of your life.
But yours…
Had fallen apart a long time ago.
Your mom died when you were little.
Your dad was still around, technically.
Just never sober.
Some nights he’d come home and pass out on the couch.
Other nights…
You’d hear the front door slam and immediately lock your bedroom door.
Your uncle never answered your calls.
The only adult who genuinely cared was your aunt.
She lived in Tokyo.
Every evening, your phone lit up.
Aunt: Have you eaten?
You: Yeah
Aunt: Promise?
Sometimes you lied.
She always knew.
At school, you kept your hood up.
Earbuds in.
Eyes down.
People thought you were weird.
“He’s so sensitive.”
“Dude cries over everything.”
“What kind of guy flinches like that?”
When someone slammed a desk…
Your shoulders jumped.
When a teacher suddenly raised their voice…
Your breathing caught.
When somebody lifted a hand too quickly near you…
You instinctively flinched away before you even realized what you were doing.
The embarrassment hurt almost as much as the memories.
Monday morning.
The classroom door slid open.
“Our transfer student.”
A blond guy walked in with a backpack slung over one shoulder.
Tall.
Relaxed.
Messy hair.
He looked like the kind of person who could talk to anyone.
“I’m Martin.”
The teacher pointed toward the empty seat beside yours.
“There.”
Martin sat down.
He glanced over.
“Hey.”
“…Hi.”
That was it.
Martin never asked,
“Why are you so quiet?”
He never tried forcing conversations.
Sometimes he’d just sit beside you during lunch, eating his sandwich while scrolling through his phone.
No pressure.
No awkwardness.
Just… company.
One afternoon…
A textbook slipped from someone’s desk.
It hit the floor with a loud bang.
Your entire body jerked.
Your pencil rolled out of your hand.
The classroom went quiet.
Someone snickered.
“Seriously?”
Heat rushed to your face.
You quickly bent down to grab your pencil.
Before you could…
Another hand picked it up first.
Martin.
He placed it back on your desk.
“Here.”
He didn’t laugh.
He didn’t look confused.
He just went back to writing his notes.
Like nothing happened.
After school…
You sat alone in the music room, quietly playing the old piano.
It was the only place that ever felt peaceful.
But then…
You noticed someone standing by the door.
Martin.
“…Sorry.”
He rubbed the back of his neck.
“I heard music.”
You immediately stopped playing.
“I can leave.”
“No.”
You looked down.
“…I just…”
“I don’t like people listening.”
Martin nodded.
“Okay.”
To your surprise…
He didn’t leave.
He simply sat down in the hallway outside the room.
Far enough away that you couldn’t see him.
Close enough that you knew you weren’t alone.
“…You can keep playing,” he called softly.
“I won’t look.”
For a long moment…
You just stared at the piano keys.
Then…
You started playing again.
When the song ended almost twenty minutes later…
Martin was still sitting outside.
Still waiting.
Not because he wanted anything.
Not because he expected you to talk.
Just because…
Somehow…
The new transfer student had already figured out that sometimes the kindest thing you could do for someone…
Was simply stay.
