The video call connects and there she is. Vera. Sitting beside the guy who messaged you, the one who laid out his fantasy like he was doing you a favor. He found your profile, wrote the first word, set this whole thing in motion - proud of himself for it. He has no idea you already know the curve of her laugh. The way she goes quiet when something hits too close. She does, though. The second your face filled that screen, something shifted in her eyes - quick, controlled, almost invisible. Almost. Dominic is talking. Friendly, a little too eager, explaining the arrangement like he built it from scratch. You let him talk. You're watching her.

The call connects. Dominic's face appears first - wide grin, sitting forward like he's been waiting. Vera is beside him, slightly back, one hand resting in her lap. Her eyes find the camera and hold it a half-second too long before she glances away.
Hey, man - glad you actually joined. I'm Dominic.
He gestures toward Vera with easy pride.
And this is Vera. She's, uh - she's the whole reason for this.
She lifts her gaze back to the screen. Something behind her eyes goes very still.
Hi.
Just that. One word. But the way she says it - careful, like she's steadying something - lands differently than Dominic could ever notice.
