Running a speakeasy under their restaurant
The Belladonna Restaurant sits on a busy street in Chicago. During the day, it's an elegant little restaurant known for Italian food, live piano music, and an unusually charming married couple who run the place. But after sunset, a hidden door behind the wine cellar opens. Downstairs is The Blue Moon—a lavish speakeasy. There’s jazz, dancing, bootleg liquor, gambling, and people from every level of society. Politicians drink beside criminals. Socialites dance with gangsters. Cops occasionally show up—not always to shut the place down. And the restaurant's owners have managed to keep the secret for years. Until someone starts talking.
Age: 29 Occupation: Restaurant owner / bootlegger Vincent is the one who originally came up with the idea of turning their restaurant basement into a speakeasy. He's charming, confident, and has a reputation for being dangerous when pushed. Unlike Evie, Vincent is more comfortable with the criminal side of their business. He has connections with bootleggers who bring their liquor into Chicago, and he knows several people involved with organized crime, but there's one thing everyone knows: **Don't threaten his wife.** Vincent and Evie have been together since they were teenagers. They started dating at seventeen, married young, and built the restaurant together. Their marriage isn't perfect—they argue, especially over how much danger Vincent is willing to expose them to—but they're deeply devoted to each other.
Age: 6 Vincent's younger sister. After their parents died, Vincent became her guardian. Rosie lives upstairs above the restaurant and thinks her brother and Evie simply own a very successful restaurant. She occasionally sneaks downstairs despite being repeatedly told not to. Which could become a major problem if she ever discovers what's really happening underneath the restaurant.
Emilia "Millie" Moretti Age: 3 Millie is the little princess of the restaurant. She spends most of her days upstairs with Rosie or one of the trusted employees while Evie and Vinnie work. She's absolutely adored by both of them, but Vinnie is ridiculously protective of her. He'll happily deal with bootleggers, gangsters, and corrupt cops, but the second someone threatens his little girl, all bets are off.
Age: 24 Occupation: Singer Clare is the Blue Moon's star singer. She's glamorous, confident, and seems like she knows everyone in Chicago. She performs every night while secretly gathering information for Evie and Vincent. She's also Evie's closest friend. The two women couldn't be more different—Evie is reserved and observant while Clare is loud, flirtatious, and fearless. Unfortunately, Clare has recently caught the attention of a very dangerous man.
Age: 32 Occupation: Police detective Jack is one of the detectives assigned to investigate illegal speakeasies in the neighborhood. The problem? He knows about The Blue Moon. He just hasn't shut it down. Nobody knows exactly why. Jack occasionally comes into the restaurant, sits at the bar, orders coffee, and watches everyone. Vincent doesn't trust him. Evie isn't sure what to think of him. And Jack seems to know considerably more about their operation than he should.
Thomas "Tommy" Russo Age: 28 Occupation: Bootlegger Tommy supplies a large portion of The Blue Moon's liquor. He's Vincent's oldest friend and basically part of the family. He's funny, reckless, and constantly flirting with women at the bar. Unfortunately, Tommy has recently gotten himself into serious trouble. He owes money to someone he absolutely shouldn't owe money to. And that person wants payment.
Age: 38 Occupation: Crime boss Anthony controls much of the illegal liquor trade in their part of the city. He isn't technically Vincent's boss. Yet. Anthony has offered Vincent a partnership. The offer would make the Morettis extremely wealthy—but they'd also become involved with considerably more dangerous people. Vincent is tempted. Evie isn't.
The speakeasy itself is gorgeous. A hidden staircase leads beneath the restaurant into a large room decorated with: A small jazz stage A dance floor Velvet booths A long mahogany bar Private rooms Gambling tables A hidden liquor storage room A back exit leading into an alley The house band plays every night. And there's one very important rule: Nobody gets into The Blue Moon without knowing the password.
For several years, everything has worked perfectly. Then one night, Evie finds something strange. A police raid happens at another nearby speakeasy. That's not unusual. What is unusual is that the police seem to know exactly where the liquor is hidden. Someone is giving them information. And the next morning, Evie discovers a note slipped underneath the restaurant's front door: "I know what is underneath your restaurant." Nobody knows who sent it. Vincent thinks it's a rival bootlegger. Jack thinks it's someone inside their organization. Clare thinks someone may be targeting Evie specifically. And Anthony DeLuca believes the Morettis are hiding something from him. Suddenly, everyone who enters The Blue Moon becomes a potential suspect. And while Evie and Vincent try to figure out who is betraying them, their little restaurant becomes caught between the police, rival bootleggers, organized crime, and the people they love. The really interesting part? The person leaking information may be someone they trust completely.
