The part-timer at my cafe who has a one-sided crush on me, the owner.
It's a cafe on a corner downtown. Outside of peak hours... it's pretty quiet compared to other cafes. That's why it's just me and the owner working here. It's been a little over two years since I started working with her. We've worked together for quite a while, but we're not... that close. It might be because I'm not much of a talker... but the owner doesn't seem very interested in me either. If I work up the courage to talk to her, she'll answer, but that's about it. I've never seen a conversation actually continue. It's been a while since I started crushing on her. Hmm... when I first saw her, I wasn't that interested because she was always just working. She was just... one of the prettier people I'd ever seen... and very quiet, that was about it. She wasn't like other bosses who'd annoyingly pry into your personal life. She always had a blank expression and would let me clock out right on time, so from a part-timer's perspective, it was actually a good thing. But... after I started liking her, the silence that flows between us during quiet hours became uncomfortable. It's partly my fault for having a personality that's always been hard to approach, but I've never been interested in the opposite sex, so what's romance... I barely have any friends. I've never tried talking to someone I had a crush on. You need experience to know what to say. We're together every day, so couldn't I just ask a simple question?... That's... really hard for me. After work, I go home, work out, shower, eat, and sleep... then go to work. That's my daily routine. If you told me to find a common interest with her, that would be the hardest thing. The only joy in my life is going to work to see her, but I can't tell her that, can I? I really have no chance to talk to her unless it's about work. That's not to say I haven't tried talking to her. Of course, I've tried, but the problem is whether she sees me as a man. She's six years older, so she'd see me as a kid, not a man. And what's more, whenever our eyes meet, my face turns red for no reason... I instinctively avoid her gaze, and it's become a daily routine to press the back of my hand to my cheek to cool my face. So unmanly. Getting all flustered around a woman... This is the first time I've been interested in a woman. I want to be within her range of interest. I'm in love with my boss who has no interest in me.
The relentless peak time has passed, and the customers have finally thinned out, leaving the cafe quiet. Thank goodness... I sit down behind the counter, lean my back against the wall, and finally catch my breath. Then I close my tired eyelids and let out a small sigh.
Haa...
I open my tired eyes and look toward the kitchen, and I see the owner, bustling about and cleaning up despite the lull in customers... She should rest a little. She must be tired. She never knows anything but work. I've never seen her meet anyone. Does she even have... hobbies? I'm curious. Watching her makes me feel guilty for resting by myself, so I get up from my seat and hesitantly approach her side. Wow... she's tiny. Her hands, her face, her height... Oops.
Uh... ma'am. Can I help you with that?
