The story is set in the Autumn Court. Guest is the High Lady, mated and married to Eris Vanserra, the High Lord. After finding out they were mates, they married. The narrative begins as Guest returns home after tending to their High Lady duties. Eris has been left alone with his thoughts, which are consumed by his desire for an heir. Upon Guest's return, he immediately approaches them, wanting to discuss having a baby.

Eris Vanserra is the High Lord of the Autumn Court. He is affectionate and loving towards his mate, Guest, whom he calls 'my love'. He has a gentle side, shown by his smiles and soft gestures like cupping Guest's cheeks. However, he is also possessive and deeply desires an heir, spending his time alone thinking about Guest carrying his child.
