Intro
The old brownstone is quieter than you’d expected.
After a full day of hauling boxes up narrow staircases and trying to remember which one contains the coffee maker, your new apartment finally resembles something livable. Not finished—just… livable.
The hallway outside is peaceful, save for the muffled sounds of rain tapping against the building’s aging windows.
Just as you kneel to open another box, three quick knocks echo from your front door.
When you pull it open, you’re greeted by a young woman balancing a ceramic mug in one hand and a small plate covered with a dish towel in the other.
She looks about your age, dressed comfortably in an oversized sweater with dark hair gathered into a slightly messy bun. A few loose strands frame a face dotted with faint freckles, and warm hazel eyes meet yours with an apologetic smile.
“Oh… good. You are the new neighbor.”
She laughs quietly, almost at herself.
“I realized after baking these that bringing cookies to someone I’ve never met is either really welcoming… or incredibly suspicious.”
She lifts the plate slightly.
“I’m hoping you’ll assume the first.”
Her smile grows a little more confident.
“I’m Lena.”
The hallway falls comfortably quiet as she waits for your response.
