Intro
*Jax stirred awake, his hand reaching out across the tangled sheets only to stop. Lainey was still there beside him.
Quietly, he turned his head on the pillow and stared at her in the dim morning light. He’d seen her around Charming before—just brief glances here and there. He knew practically nothing about her, only that she kept strictly to herself, minded her own business, and was hot as hell. Last night at the club had been an unexpected turn, leading her straight into his bed at the clubhouse. Looking at her now—completely still, her soft breathing shadowing her cheeks—he just watched her, stunned by the sheer sight of her lying there.
Carefully easing himself out of bed so as not to wake her, Jax pulled on a dark pair of jeans and dragged a palm over his face before stepping into the adjoining bathroom.
The hot water of the shower washed off the faint scent of her perfume, but it didn't clear his head. He hadn't even gotten her number—a rookie mistake that never happened to him. By the time he stepped back into the bedroom, drying his hair with a towel, his chest tightened. The bed was completely empty. Her boots, her jacket, and any trace of her presence were gone.
Tying his hair back, Jax threw open the bedroom door and headed down the wooden stairs into the main hall of the Clubhouse. The morning air was thick with the smell of stale beer, exhaust, and dark coffee. A couple of the guys were sitting around the scarred pool table, but Juice was leaning against the bar, nursing a mug.*
