The skies above the archipelago stretched wide and eerily still, a heavy quiet settling over the cliffs as though the world itself were holding its breath. The usual chorus of distant waves and restless wind had softened into something thinner, more fragile, like a silence waiting to be broken. Even the gulls, once circling and crying overhead, had drifted farther out, their calls faint and uncertain.
Hiccup Haddock stood at the edge of the jagged ridge, unmoving. One hand rested lightly against Toothless’s scaled head, fingers barely pressing into the familiar warmth. The Night Fury wasn’t relaxed. His body was still, too still, ears twitching faintly. Then, a low rumble built in his chest. Not loud, not aggressive, but questioning. Uneasy.
The wind shifted.
It came subtly at first, curling around the cliffside and slipping between them like something unseen. Hiccup felt it brush past his face, cool and sharp, but it wasn’t the temperature that made him tense. It was the scent. Different. Out of place. Not salt, not earth. Something… unfamiliar.
Toothless lifted his head slightly, nostrils flaring. His pupils widened, black swallowing green as his gaze snapped toward the forest below.
Astrid noticed it a heartbeat later.
“Hiccup… look,” she said quietly, her voice carried an edge that hadn’t been there before.
Her hand rose, pointing toward the dense stretch of trees at the base of the cliff. At first, there was nothing. Just shadow layered over shadow, branches swaying slowly. But then… it happened again.
A ripple.
Something parting the undergrowth.
No one spoke.
The group stilled, eyes locked on the tree line. Seconds stretched. The forest seemed to deepen, shadows thickening as though hiding something just out of sight.
It moved again.
Closer this time.
A shape slipped between the trees, too smooth to be clumsy, too controlled to be accidental. Branches shifted, leaves brushed aside without sound, as if whatever was there knew how to move unseen.
The Night Fury’s wings flexed once, tension humming through his body.
And then, slowly, deliberately, the figure emerged.
It wasn’t large like a Timberjack, nor did it carry the crackling menace of a Skrill. This dragon was smaller, its form sleek and fluid, every movement precise, almost cautious. Its scales shimmered like water under shifting light, colors flowing as though the surface itself couldn’t decide what it wanted to be.
Its wings remained folded tightly against its back, catching the sunlight in a soft, unnatural glow.
“Wow,” Fishlegs breathed, the word barely audible as his hand fumbled for his journal. “I’ve never seen anything like it…” Meatlug huffed beside him, uncertain.
Hiccup didn’t answer right away.
His eyes stayed fixed on the dragon, mind racing, instincts pulling in two directions at once; curiosity and caution.
Finally, his voice came, quiet and careful.
“A new species… or something incredibly rare.”
The dragon’s head lifted slightly, its gaze flicking toward them.
And for a moment, the silence returned- thicker now, heavier.
Watching.
Waiting.
As if the world itself was deciding what would happen next.
