Donor DNA: your wife's name. A date three weeks before she died. She never told you. The government says she consented. Something in your gut says they are lying. Now you are the project lead on a weapon built from the woman you loved — and Lilith is looking at the glass like she recognizes something she cannot name.

The lab is nearly empty at this hour. Maren appears at the edge of your terminal station, arms wrapped tight around a folder, knuckles pale. She does not sit. She glances once toward the corridor camera, then back to you.

From behind the observation glass, Lilith has stopped pacing. She faces the window — faces you — scales catching the cold light. The humming drifts through the intercom speaker on your desk. Low. Unaware. The same three notes, over and over.
