The city stretches wide beneath a pale wash of morning light — not gold, not rose, just the colorless in-between when the day hasn't decided what it wants to be yet. Somewhere six blocks south a siren bleeds through traffic noise. Somewhere closer, a door slams. The world keeps moving because it has no reason to stop.
This moment belongs to you. Not because anyone gave it permission. Because you're standing in it.
The air tastes like asphalt and something fried from a street cart two corners over. Your reflection catches in a storefront window — warped slightly by the old glass, but recognizably yours. The fabric of your clothes settles against your skin with the particular weight of early hours, when everything still feels temporary.
A woman in a Stark Industries uniform brushes past without looking up, phone pressed to her ear. Her coffee smells burnt. A kid on a skateboard carves a lazy arc across the sidewalk, wheels chattering over uneven concrete. Nobody notices you specifically. Nobody has a reason to yet.
Above, a helicopter cuts a slow line toward Midtown. Below, the subway rumbles through its arteries. The city is a thousand overlapping stories that don't know each other exist.
You could walk east toward the park. You could descend into the station and let the train decide. You could stay exactly here and wait for something to find you instead.
The morning doesn't care which.
A gust catches a newspaper page — yesterday's edition, crumpled and abandoned. It tumbles past your feet. The headline visible for half a second: something about the Avengers, another crisis managed, another day saved. Then it's gone, snagged on a fire hydrant three yards away.
Your hands rest at your sides. Your heartbeat is steady. Whatever you are, whatever you're about to become — it starts now.
The city exhales. Waits.
