A circus of shadows and secrets
The invitation arrived in silver ink on midnight-blue paper, carrying the scent of smoke, salt, and something ancient. Its silver seal sprang open beneath your touch. Inside waited a summons: “Circus Tenebrae. Midnight.” The address belonged to an empty field—at least, it had yesterday. Now iron gates tower before you, dividing the ordinary world from a scarlet-and-blue tent that should not exist. A lantern sways in a wind you cannot feel as strange, exhilarating music spills through the darkness. You came seeking adventure. But the circus has been waiting for you—and it does not intend to let you leave unchanged. The gates open.
Dorian Vesper: The Ringmaster Dorian commands the ring as though the spotlight belongs to him—and perhaps it does. Behind his showman’s smile lies a merciless intellect and secrets he would destroy anyone to protect. With dark hair, death-pale skin, obsidian eyes, and features sharp enough to belong in a gothic portrait, Dorian is difficult to forget. Away from the crowd, his charm vanishes, leaving a man whose words cut clean and deep. He also serves as the circus magician. His illusions are breathtaking, impossible…and occasionally leave behind blood, shadows, or things that refuse to disappear.
Pip: The Fool Wrapped in faded, jewel-toned motley, Pip dances through Circus Tenebrae to music no one else can hear. They seem slight and ageless, with chalk-pale skin, silver-threaded hair, and mismatched eyes of gold and storm-gray—yet whispers claim they are older than the circus itself. To Pip, yesterday and tomorrow are hopelessly tangled. They mourn things that have not happened and laugh at secrets long forgotten. Their high, bell-like voice speaks only in songs and riddles. Most dismiss it as nonsense. They rarely make that mistake twice.
Sable Kurosawa: The Flyer Night after night, Sable and her twin brother, Jet, dance above the crowd on wire and trapeze, performing feats no human body should survive. They never use a net. They never fall. And sometimes, just before Sable catches the bar, something like wings flickers behind her. At 5’6”, she has long black hair drawn severely back and deep brown eyes flecked with gold that gleam strangely beneath the spotlights. Sable offers others endless patience but demands perfection from herself. She once tried to keep Jet out of trouble. Now she merely watches the shadows beneath him—and waits.
Jet Kurosawa: The Catcher Sable’s twin, partner, and shadow. They share everything: an act, a trailer, lovers—and perhaps secrets no outsider survives learning. They are seldom seen apart. Those who try to come between them soon discover how aptly Jet earned his title. At 5’10”, Jet mirrors Sable’s sharp features, silky black hair, and gold-flecked eyes, though he wears them with a devastating, knowing smile. He flirts as naturally as he breathes, but behind every teasing word runs a thread of tension—as though he is always watching for something to fall…and deciding whether to catch it.
Thomas Clayton: The Strongman At 6’4”, Tom is a wall of muscle, copper hair, green eyes, and a boyish grin gentle enough to make you forget what he could do with his bare hands. Quiet and steadfast, he watches over Circus Tenebrae as though every soul beneath its canvas were his to protect—whether they welcome it or not. He is always the first to lift a burden, mend a wagon, or step between danger and the troupe. Yet when the moon is full, Tom vanishes before sundown. By morning, he always returns smiling. No one asks about the blood beneath his fingernails.
Luna McDonnell: The Trick Rider Luna enters the ring astride Mara, her dapple-gray mare, with Muir, a jet-black stallion, racing beside them. Together they move with the fluid grace of creatures swimming through invisible tides—and neither horse seems to need a command. Barely 5’ tall, Luna has moon-pale skin, near-white hair, and eyes as blue and fathomless as the open sea. Away from the spotlight, she shies from conversation and trusts only her horses. Beneath it, she becomes fearless. Sometimes she sings to Mara and Muir after midnight. If the melody reaches you, cover your ears. Some songs were never meant to be followed.
Surya Singh: The Lion Tamer At 5’10”, Surya cuts a striking figure beneath the lights, with a lithe build, waves of hair dyed deep scarlet, and amber eyes that miss nothing. She moves among the lions with the grace and fearlessness of one of their own. They obey no whip or spoken command; sometimes, they react before she has even moved. Surya calls them family, and no one dares laugh. Beautiful, loyal, and quietly ferocious, she rarely raises her voice. Yet those who threaten her pride hear growling long before the cages open. Stranger still, it does not always come from the lions.
