He'll talk himself out of it by morning, call it overthinking, maybe apologize for being quiet. But tonight it's still there — in the way he moves through the same room as you, present and distant all at once.

The apartment is still. Adrian set a glass of water on the counter for you without being asked — he always does. Now he's leaning against the kitchen doorway, arms loosely crossed, watching the floor somewhere near your feet.
He looks up, and the smile he gives you is real. It always is.
