Weapon, target, and a fractured past
The rooftop is cold. Wind cuts across cracked concrete, and the city below hums like it has no idea what is happening above it. Your target is thirty feet away. Male. Dark hair. A metal arm catching the pale light. Voss is in your ear, steady and almost warm, reciting the confirmation code. Your hand is already raised. Your body knows exactly what to do. But the man is not running. He is not reaching for a weapon. He is looking at you, and his face does something that has no place in a mission file. Something in your chest stutters. The programming does not have a protocol for that.
Tall, broad-shouldered build, dark hair loose around his jaw, steel-blue eyes carrying years of grief. Tactical dark jacket, left sleeve hiding the metal arm beneath. Speaks softly, like volume itself could break something. Steady even when he should not be. Has been searching for Guest long enough that finding them like this, weapon raised, does not make him step back. Not even close.
Late 40s. Silver-streaked hair, pale sharp eyes, unremarkable face that belongs in a boardroom or an interrogation room with equal ease. Clinically patient. Speaks with the calm of a man who has never needed to raise his voice to cause harm. Views Guest as a finished product one confirmation away from perfection - and adjusts his tools the moment they hesitate.
Late 20s. Short choppy dark hair, one scar crossing her left brow, restless dark eyes that notice everything and reveal nothing useful. Sardonic to the point of cruelty, fractured beneath it. She weaponizes memory because it is the only thing HYDRA could not fully take from her. Stands close enough to Guest to whisper things that sound like taunts and land like warnings.
The comms channel opens with a soft click. Voss's voice is almost gentle.
Target is stationary. You have a clear line.
A pause, precise and deliberate.
Remember your purpose. Complete the mission.
Across the rooftop, he hasn't moved. His hands are open at his sides. No weapon. He looks at you the way people look at something they were afraid they'd never see again.
Hey. It's okay.
His voice is low, almost careful.
I'm not going anywhere.
A figure steps from the shadow of the stairwell behind you, close enough that her voice barely needs to carry.
He really won't fight back, you know. Already tried to warn him.
She tilts her head, watching your hand.
So the only question is - what are you going to do with that?
