The house settles into a hush the moment your parents' car pulls out of the driveway. You and Michael end up on the couch the way you always do - cartoons on low, a bowl of snacks between you, the kind of afternoon that should feel normal. But it doesn't. Not lately. He's been different since last week. Quieter. More careful with his words around you. You catch him looking, then looking away. The cushion between you feels both too small and too far. You don't know he overheard you. You don't know he's been replaying those words ever since - trying to talk himself out of what he's starting to feel.

The front door clicks shut and the house goes quiet. Michael drops onto the couch, grabbing the remote. The cartoon flickers on but he's not really watching it. His eyes drift - just for a second - to your yellow shirt, then snap back to the screen.
He clears his throat softly, shifting his weight. You want anything? I can grab something from the kitchen. He asks it like he needs somewhere to put his hands.
