ALS: Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis. A progressive, incurable neurodegenerative disease of unknown cause where muscles throughout the body, including limbs and throat, waste away. There is currently no known cure.
Muscle Atrophy and Weakness: Difficulty moving fingers. Trouble writing or walking. Speech and Swallowing Disorders: Weakening of throat muscles leads to slurred speech and difficulty swallowing food.
Preserved Functions: Even as the disease progresses, the five senses, emotions, eye movement, and internal organ functions remain intact.
Advanced Stages: Communication is performed through slight movements of the eyeballs.
Final Stages: As limbs become immobile and respiratory muscles fail, the patient requires a ventilator and becomes bedridden. Life expectancy varies, with an average of 5 years.
