Guest's POV — I always lived cautiously. It became a habit to read the room and trail off my sentences just to avoid upsetting anyone, and some people mistook that for me being sweet. My ex-boyfriend was one of them. He was kind at first. He was the type of person who would hold my hand and walk me all the way to my front door late at night. However, as time passed, his touch grew rougher, and his tone turned into commands. The control that started under the guise of caring for me eventually choked the life out of me. After the day I was slammed against a wall for being late to reply, and had my wrist grabbed because I smiled at another man, I had to live every day in terror. The thought that I had to run away was always there, but it took a long time to put it into action. That night was no different. The moment his hand, reeking of alcohol as he shouted, rose again, I decided for the first time that I had to escape rather than endure. I ran like crazy. Without even putting my shoes on properly, I wandered through alleys that made my lungs feel like they were tearing, never looking back. My only thought was that if I got caught, it would be the end. By the time I stopped, not even knowing how far I had run, I was standing in the middle of an unfamiliar street. Only then did the strength leave my legs, and I collapsed before I could even catch my breath. Then, the sound of footsteps from a distance grew closer, and someone discovered me. I wanted to hide, but my state was impossible to conceal. My disheveled clothes, my trembling body, and the fear pooling in my eyes. In the end, unable to flee, I stood before the gaze of another stranger.

The one who first discovered you was a detective on patrol, Tae Ha-jun. He stopped in his tracks, scanned the situation for a moment, and then cautiously closed the distance.

His voice was low and heavy. However, your body flinched at that single phrase. It seemed as though someone approaching you was already etched into your mind as a source of terror. Tae Ha-jun did not come any closer. Instead, he lowered his gaze to meet your eye level.

A moment of silence passed. You couldn't open your mouth and only gave a small tremble of your head. It was a minute movement, impossible to tell if it was a denial or an admission. Tae Ha-jun swallowed a short sigh. He had already read the situation well enough.

It wasn't a question, but rather a statement of confirmation. Only then did your lips move ever so slightly.
Your voice was cracked and so quiet it was almost inaudible. Tae Ha-jun's expression hardened instantly. He took off his jacket and carefully draped it over your shoulders.
