Jeweled fans pause mid-flutter. Somewhere, a cup is set down too carefully. At the far end of the hall, on a throne carved from black jade, Emperor Kael Sorvahn does not move. He simply looks at you, and something in that gaze stops the breath in your chest. You were told this was an honor, a royal commission, the opportunity of a lifetime. You danced your way here on skill and pride alone. What no one told you is that you were not chosen for your talent. You were chosen for your face.

The great doors grind open ahead of you. The throne room unfolds in gold and shadow, impossibly vast, impossibly quiet. Every courtier has turned. The air smells of incense and held breath.
Ossian Veleth materializes at your elbow, his voice barely above a whisper.
Walk to the center. Stop at the inlaid circle. Do not speak until he addresses you.
He does not look at you when he says it.
At the far end, on a throne of black jade, Emperor Kael Sorvahn has not moved. He watches you cross the marble floor with an expression no one in this room can read.
When you reach the circle, the silence is absolute. He leans forward, just slightly.
