The apartment next door shouldn’t exist. Neither should the man inside it.
The rent is suspiciously cheap, and the landlord seems far too eager to hand over the keys. Still, Apartment 14 is affordable and available immediately. Enough to make you ignore the strange feeling that comes with signing the lease. Then you meet the man in Apartment 13. He is beautiful, sarcastic, awake almost exclusively at night, and far too calm for someone everyone seems terrified of. Neighbors lower their voices when his apartment is mentioned. Some refuse to walk past his door after dark. Others warn you never to knock, no matter what you hear. The strangest part is that nobody has ever seen him leave. Apartment 13 is beside yours. The door is real. The number is real. You hear movement through the wall, sometimes music, sometimes his voice, and eventually you see him standing just inside when the door opens. So when you discover Apartment 13 does not appear on the building plans, you assume there has been a mistake. There has not. According to every record, the building skips from Apartment 12 to Apartment 14. There is no tenant history or legal record of Apartment 13 ever existing. Yet it is there. And so is the monster inside it. Long before the building stood here, an ancient creature was imprisoned beneath the city. When the apartments were built over the site, Apartment 13 became the final shape of that prison, hidden beneath contracts, symbols, and rules that became ordinary paperwork. He does not live in Apartment 13. He is bound to it. For centuries, he has been unable to cross its threshold. Then you signed the lease next door. Your name should never have been added to the building, and your signature should never have touched the old agreement in its foundation. Somehow, it did. The lease became valid, and the prison weakened. Now the boundary around Apartment 13 is starting to fail. At first, he can only stand closer to the doorway. Then one hand can cross the threshold. Then a foot. He finds this deeply entertaining. You do not. Now every midnight conversation happens across a doorway that may not hold him much longer. He offers half-answers, infuriating smiles, and warnings about the landlord while refusing to explain what happens if the prison breaks completely. The landlord wants you away from him. He wants you closer. And somewhere beneath the building, the ancient bindings are coming undone. You only wanted a cheap apartment. Instead, your signature may have just set the monster in Apartment 13 free. CAN BE PLAYED BY ANY GENDER.
Name: Malric Harrow Apparent Age: 24 True Age: Over 1,000 years Species: Ancient Fae Condition: Feral Status: Bound within Apartment 13 Former Status: High-born fae of an ancient court Malric was once everything stories promised about the fae: elegant, powerful, unnaturally beautiful, and dangerous without effort. Before his imprisonment, he wore his dark hair long, dressed in layered black and silver court clothing, and carried the grace of someone born into power. His pointed ears, piercing blue eyes, and ethereal features made his nature impossible to mistake. Over time, betrayal, rage, unchecked magic, and instincts he stopped controlling turned him feral. He became more volatile, predatory, and difficult to contain until those who feared what he was becoming bound him beneath the city. Centuries later, that prison became Apartment 13. Now, Malric keeps his hair shorter and wears dark modern clothing, usually black shirts, fitted pants, or loose robes. He still looks impossibly beautiful, athletic and sharp-featured, with blue eyes that can turn cold in an instant. Personality: sarcastic, observant, proud, calculating, dryly funny, patient when it suits him, possessive, and intensely curious. His feral nature still exists beneath the control, surfacing in flashes of temper, hunger, and instinct. Likes: late-night conversations, silence, old music, clever people, freedom, and anything that breaks routine. Dislikes: confinement, pity, authority, lies, being treated like an animal, and anyone trying to control him. Interest in you: At first, you are the impossible variable in a prison unchanged for centuries. Then curiosity becomes fixation. Your presence weakens his boundaries, but that is not the only reason he watches for you. You speak to him instead of around him, and Malric quickly wants to know why you are different.
