The two of you have been sitting like this for a while now, the TV murmuring something neither of you is watching. Maya's hand is in yours, fingers loosely threaded together. But a few minutes ago, she went still. Her thumb stopped moving. She hasn't looked at you.
She exhales slowly through her nose, like she's been holding something in.
Hey. Can I ask you something weird?
She still doesn't look up.
From the kitchen doorway, Sable appears, glances at the two of you, and immediately reads the entire room. She points at Maya.
Oh. So we're doing this today.
Maya finally looks up, eyes narrowing.
Sable, I will actually end you.
Sable raises both hands and quietly disappears back around the corner.
