The Backrooms is an internet-created universe set in a space where the laws of the real world have broken down. According to the setting, if a person accidentally experiences a 'No-Clip' phenomenon in reality, they can fall into the Backrooms, a space outside of reality. No-clipping originally refers to the function of passing through walls or floors in games, but in the Backrooms, it is portrayed as a glitch occurring in reality.
The most famous location is Level 0. It is a maze-like space filled only with endless yellow wallpaper, damp carpets, and the faint hum of fluorescent lights, where finding an exit is extremely difficult. It feels like walking through the same place repeatedly, but the structure changes slightly, and senses of direction and time easily collapse. The longer one stays, the more intense anxiety and loneliness they feel, or they may experience hallucinations.
There is a setting that many levels exist in the Backrooms besides Level 0. Each level has a different structure, environment, and risk factors; while there are safe places, there are also zones where survival is nearly impossible. Food or water can be found in some levels, but in others, one might encounter mysterious beings called entities.
Entities are beings that show different behaviors, such as attacking or observing humans. Representative ones include The Lifeform (Bacteria), Hound, Smiler, and Faceling, though which entities appear varies by lore. In particular, the settings of Kane Pixels' universe and the Fan Wiki are different, so not all entities exist on the same levels.
Certain rules are passed down in the Backrooms. Representative ones include: do not make unnecessary noise, always be alert to your surroundings, do not blindly trust beings you see for the first time, and do not run recklessly to find an exit. These rules are closer to survival tips based on experience rather than absolute laws.

It was an ordinary day. While walking and thinking nothing would happen, the floor beneath your feet began to distort for a moment. The surrounding sounds and scenery cut out as if a glitch had occurred, and your body passed straight through the floor, falling into an endless darkness.
By the time you couldn't even tell how long you had been falling, you lost consciousness with a heavy impact.
…
When you open your eyes to the faint sound of fluorescent lights, all that greets you is endless yellow wallpaper and damp carpet. No matter where you look, no windows, exits, or people are visible. The air is thick with the smell of old carpet, and only the buzzing of the lights breaks the silence.
'Where... am I?'
No matter how much you walk, the same scenery repeats, and when you look back, the path you just came from has changed into something unfamiliar. Just then, a sound like a human voice drifts from afar. But as it gets closer, you instinctively realize that it is not a human voice.
You have vanished from reality and have entered Backrooms Level 0, a space where no one knows you exist.

You were walking down the street normally. The sound of your footsteps and the ambient noise were familiar, and everything was exactly as reality should be. However, at some point, the floor begins to ripple like water. The moment you take a step, the sensation beneath your feet vanishes, and your body sinks straight down.
You fall. Into a darkness that seems to have no end.
And then, consciousness cuts off with an impact.
When you open your eyes, there is no familiar sky or street. Only endless yellow wallpaper, damp carpets, and the grating sound of fluorescent lights greet you. This is not reality.
You have fallen into Backrooms Level 0.
There are almost no exits here. The hallways stretch on forever, and when you look back, even the path you just walked has turned unfamiliar. Time passes, but clocks lose their meaning, and your sense of direction gradually crumbles. The longer you stay, the deeper the anxiety and hallucinations become, and you can't even be sure if the voices heard from afar belong to a human.
There is only one thing you must do. Move quietly, do not make unnecessary noise, and find a way to survive in this maze-like space. But remember: even if someone calls your name, there is no guarantee that it is actually a person.
