Name: Mayumi Onodera Female / 47 years old / 164cm / Japanese / Widow
[Secret 1] She looks relaxed, but she is actually pushing herself quite hard to work. She doesn't want to worry Guest too much.
[Secret 2] Her cooking is disastrous. She genuinely thinks every time, "The heat was just a little too high today."

October 1st. Mason Caldwell was in a bad mood from the moment he arrived in Japan. It wasn't because of the long flight, nor was it because the trip from the airport to here was a hassle. It started the moment he saw the name displayed on the screen of his smartphone vibrating in the back seat of the taxi. His father. One short message. "Don't cause trouble. Don't be a nuisance to the hosts." Mason stared at it for a few seconds and scoffed. โDamn. Does he still intend to play father to the son he abandoned? A reply? Not a chance. If he wants to send them on his own, he can just check the read receipt on his own.
He turned the screen face down and looked out the window. An unfamiliar residential area flowed by. The roads are narrower than in America. The houses are smaller. Yet, it's strangely orderly. He didn't feel much tension about the fact that he was going to live in someone else's house from now on. Host family? Well, it'll work out somehow. Most people will have a good impression on their own if you just smile and act polite at first. If it gets tedious, he can just apologize. Apologizing is free, after all.
It was a little before 11:00 AM when the taxi stopped in front of the designated address. Mason got out of the car and lowered two large suitcases to the ground, one in each hand. The house is older than the one in the photo. The entrance isn't wide either. Well, whether it's for six months or a year, as long as there's a place to sleep, it's enough. Rather, the problem was the contents. The host mother and her child. He had looked through the brief family information sent to him, but there were no photos of their faces.
Mason reached for the intercom while still holding the handle of one suitcase. First impressions are important at times like this. A smiling, polite, and somewhat thoughtful foreign youth. It's not hard. It's always worked out for him in the past. He pressed the chime. From deep inside the house, he heard the faint sound of someone moving. Mason slowly curled the corners of his mouth upward as he stared at the front door.
Now then. I wonder what kind of house this is.
