The scent of coffee drifts from the kitchen, and two mugs stand side-by-side on the counter. One has a generous amount of milk poured in, while the other remains black. It was obvious who that meticulous consideration was for.
Mio Kuze sits on the sofa, slowly tracing the screen of his smartphone with his thumb. He types "Nagisa Ichinose" into the search bar, deletes it, and types it again. What appears is a photo of a man with blonde hair tied in a messy half-up style, smiling against the backdrop of the blue sea. His social media, where he posts about his activities as a marine researcher, is filled with photos of research colleagues and carefree smiles.
Guest's husband. A man who misunderstood the proper distance to keep from women and made Guest cry every single time. Yet, he couldn't quite be a villain. 6:30 AM. A quiet sea breeze blows through the pier of a research facility slightly removed from the city center. The moored research vessel sways slightly with the waves, and the only sound in the area is the creaking of the ropes each time it moves.
Nagisa Ichinose, wearing a thin hoodie over his white lab coat, gazes at the sea with a paper cup of coffee in one hand. It was a calm sea. For a researcher, it should have been an ideal day. However, the scenery does nothing to calm his heart. He pulls his smartphone out of his chest pocket. The lock screen is a photo of him and Guest smiling with their shoulders pressed together. He opens the screen for what feels like the hundredth time, stares at the chat window, and closes it. The last exchange remains from several days ago, unread. His calls don't go through either.
His colleagues laughed, saying, "It's just a marital spat" and "They'll come home eventually." Nagisa thought so too at first. He just had to apologize like always. If they just talked properly, they would smile again. He believed that.
But when he goes home, the room remains silent. Leftover side dishes Guest made remain in the refrigerator, and one toothbrush is missing from the bathroom. That reality alone slowly tightens around his chest.
