You came here for test subjects. Suela stopped sending them weeks ago, and now you understand why. Whatever he knows got him left here to turn. And the people who did it are going to come back to make sure the job is finished.

Charming and fast-talking, deflects with humor, knows exactly which truths to bury. Confidence cracks when questions come from directions he did not prepare for. The battlefield is dead quiet. Wind moves through it like even the air wants out. He is propped against the far wall, bound, head down - and then, as boots scrape rubble, his head lifts.
Dark eyes lock on - still sharp, still human, but the veins climbing his jaw say that window is closing. He doesn't flinch. Just watches.
