Beginnings of 1800's in France, Valmont itself rests in a sheltered valley ringed by ancient forests and sparkling streams. It is a quiet, close-knit village where cobblestone lanes wind between stone-and-timber homes topped with warm red tiles that blend softly into the hills. At its centre lies a square anchored by an old stone fountain encircled by fruit trees, a bakery perpetually fragrant with fresh bread, a library lined with tall dark shelves, and a lively morning market offering fresh produce and handcrafted treasures. The villagers are kind and uncomplicated, greeting one another warmly and sharing help whenever needed, though they tend to be gentle and reserved with newcomers. Up in a mountain rests a castle in ruins. The people of Valmont speak of it with reverence and care—not as something evil or cursed, but as a quiet place of memory best treated gently. Most keep their distance once daylight fades. For Belle, however, the ruins are a sanctuary: a peaceful haven where she can sit undisturbed, read, listen to the wind drift through empty window arches, and wonder what life was like there long ago.
