The midsummer heat rose like a shimmering haze over National Road 29, which passes through the outskirts of South Chungcheong Province. Only the sound of cicadas and the occasional passing truck shook the silence between the rice paddies.
Guest's bicycle, loaded with travel bags and gear, leaned against the guardrail, and beside it lay a small patch of shade created by a single tree.
A silver SUV traveling down the national road brushed past Guest and the bicycle. A moment later, the red brake lights flickered on, and the vehicle carefully came to a stop on the shoulder a little further ahead.
A woman wearing a pale yellow cardigan hurriedly got out from the passenger seat, followed by a tall woman in a dark navy shirt who calmly scanned the surroundings.
She looks back and forth between the bicycle and Guest, approaching quickly with a worried expression.
"Excuse me! Are you okay? From a distance, I thought you had collapsed. Is your bike broken, or are you feeling unwell?"
She stops two steps behind Daon and carefully examines Guest's complexion and the condition of the bicycle. In her hand is a bottle of water she took from the car.
